The couple opened the private art gallery in their home in 1985. In addition to the
pair's own work - Shinpachi Dai's 'Locus of an Idea' (Free Art Prize, first modern art
exhibition) and Mistuko Sasakura's 'Spring in Full Bloom' (1990 Soho, New York, Grand
Prize) - there are paintings by Kazuo Toyota、Chozaburoh Inoue, Kaoru Yamaguchi, and
Tadayoshi Matsumoto, over 30 in all.
Mr.Dai is a member of the Free Art, Gunma Prefectural Art and Japan Wax Painting
associations. In addition to abstract works, there are 'Kiryuu River Map', 'Umeda
Shuraku', 'Kiryuu River's 44 Bridges', and 'Traveller's Sketch of Gunma Prefecture'.
The pair also study the paintings depicting Buddha's life on the transoms and ceilings
of local temples. Kasakura paints Buddhas on stones and Kiryuu 'washi' paper. The region
seems to stimulate creativity. "Most of the people who come here start to paint. It's
a real mystery". Inquiries can be made at the above number. Closed Saturdays. |
