Here you will find a collection of dolls from around the country, masks from Polynesia,
Indonesia and other areas, 'hina' dolls, 'hina' hanging scrolls, and quilted, striped, and
spashed pattern ('kasuri') fabric samples.
Mr. Yamaga has done restorative work on the 'Kiryuu battledores', (Tekisui art gallery
collection, Ashiya city) and Gunma sleeve and sword kites from Maebashi and Takazaki,
while his wife Toshie has brought Kiryuu elder sister ('onesama') dolls back to life using
local 'washi' paper.
Also in their collection are the letters and song sheets of Mayori Kurokawa, a
Kiryuu-born Japanese historian; the research of Koku Shima, a photographer at the time the
Japan was opened to foreign trade and inventor of early lead type; and duplicates of 16
sketches by late Edo Western studies scholar and southern painter, Kazan Watanabe (1793 -
1841).
Composed in October, Tenpo-2, at the request of his younger sister, Tomo, who was
married to Mohei Iwamoto of Kiryuu, they include 'Mt.Azuma, Mt.Ongoku and Kohmei Temple',
'Kiryuu's Shinmachi from Mt. Raiden' and 'Oguramura from the top of Ogura' (Jouyou Gakuen
collection, Shizuoka city).
Kazan's travel log, 'Yuuki', accompanies the sketches, making for an interesting
collection. Mr. Yamaga is a member of the Gun Shop Business and Japan Doll and Toy
Research associations. |
