Tape recordings of work songs and local folk tunes are kept here, the main ones being
the Kaizawa, Aizu, Mikuni, Usui, Tohseki, and Akagi packhorse drivers' songs from within
the city.
Umeda's 'Kaizawa Packhorse Drivers' Song' was sung by men transporting charcoal and
'Aizu Packhorse Drivers' Song' by those carrying hemp and 'geta'. 'Akagi' was sung while
drawing and transporting spring water.
The 'Usui' and 'Tohseki' songs were for travelling over mountains. Others in the
collection include the first and second generation ditch diggers' 'Yagi Melody';
Sakaimachi's 'Akawan Melody', said to be the original form of the 'Yagi Melody'; 'Kizaki
Chorus', sung by the stage prostitutes at Kizaki Inn in Nittamachi; and Tamamuramachi's
'Yokotaru Chorus'. |
