neering Works Office The gravitational concrete dam, started in 1974 and completed 9
years later, was built to control flooding, provide the city with water, ensure a constant
water supply and generate power.
60.5 meters high and 264 meters long, the dike holds 12,200,000 cubic meters of water
in reserve. The city relies on the Watarase and Kiryuu rivers for water; however, the
Kiryuu river can only supply a maximum of 34,500 cubic meters per day.
Employing the 1.8 cubic m./sec. maximum water flow and 39 meter largest effective
drop, the prefectural industrial office produces 1784 megawatts of power annually at the
Kiryuu generator (maximum output 470 watts/hour?)located directly under the dam.
On city-sponsored 'Facilities Viewing Days', held 6 times a year, and the Sunday of
'Learn About Forests and Rivers Week' at the end of July, it is possible to descend the 40
meter inspection route located inside the dam by elevator. To tour the dam at other times,
group reservations are required. Kiryuu - City Art Gallery and Small Museum
