On the day Kyusuke was sent off to Kyoto by the villagers, a cold wind was blowing. The distant Akagi Mountain was blanketed with snow as he trod along the central mountain road. The Kisoji Road passed through a deep, dark forest which even in daytime seemed very gloomy indeed. Walking along the road, Kyusuke was startled by the sudden "Caw! Caw!" of birds crying out in the trees overhead. Having heard that bandits hiding in the forest sometimes attcked wayfarers, so Kyusuke took a roudabout way to avoid them.
